Alumni Association of Hunter College Statement on Anti-Asian Violence

This past year has been hard for so many of us, and the Coronavirus has taken its toll on each of our lives. We may have lost a loved one, experienced financial hardship, or just mourn the loss of the ability to freely interact in the ways that we’re used to.

2020 ignited an awareness in so many of long standing injustices, inequalities and inequities. We cannot sit by quietly as our fellow New Yorkers, our fellow Americans, our fellow human beings are being subjected to prejudicial acts, to racism and violence. What happened in Georgia on March 17 of this year is abhorrent. It is only the latest in many examples of violence and hate towards Asians, Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders that have been committed over the year.

The Alumni Association of Hunter College was established almost 150 years ago to support our fellow graduates, to provide a space to continue our camaraderie of what we experienced as students of Hunter College. The motto of Hunter is Mihi Cura Futuri, or the care of the future is mine. We embrace this and acknowledge that we must look out for each other now, in order to prepare a better world for those yet to come.  We would be remiss if we did not recognize the importance of our diversity in our Hunter community. We stand in support of our Asian, Asian-American and Pacific Islander students, alumni, staff and faculty. We recognize that there is strength in our differences and that our similarities bring us together.
