February 14, 1870
On this date the Female Normal College and High School, as our college was known at the beginning, opened for classes, with over a thousand students. This was the first free public higher education for women anywhere in the country, and it was racially integrated from the start, in keeping with the vision of our founder, renowned educator Dr. Thomas Hunter.
